Three Social Media/Cocktail Party Quick-tips
September 17, 2008 | Posted by: Neil
Social media guru Chris Brogan was featured in this excellent webinar today on new media tactics. The presentation was great, and I was inspired to expand on an analogy he made between cocktail parties and getting started in social media;
- Don't burst into the party yelling- Remember that everyone else has been there for a while. Get a feel for the mood, tone and attitude of the party (or media) before you start screaming for attention.
- Bring something to the party- It is polite, and your mother would be proud. Whether it be relevant content or links, a resource recommendation or a cheese log, being generous is an easy way to break down barriers.
- Don't try and connect with everyone- Find those who have similar interests, hobbies or questions. A couple meaningful conversations will likely prove more valuable than 50 short "hey how are ya?"s. A good connection will take time, and it almost always starts with a two-way conversation.

Nice post. Love the analogies to real life - after all it is called “social” media.
I’d add one more…
Don’t spend the entire time talking about yourself. People are drawn to and more interested in people who are interested in them.
