The Smiley Face: The Ultimate Design

Consider the Smiley Face. I think it’s the ultimate in design.

So simple. Conveys a gazillion different messages just by changing one element. Anyone can do it. Anywhere. Works in any medium - pencil, snow, spray paint, Twizzlers.
Is there anything else so elegant, simple and universally understood?

How about the AIGA symbol icons?

Not an answer, but you know, wal-mart is trying to trademark the smiley face.

In light his recent events I’d expect they would can the guy.

Yikes. I think those examples just about kill the elegance claim. ;-)

And just typing the above made me think that what might be simpler and more elegant (but obviously related and derivative)… emoticons!
