Keep the funny. Lose the bunny.*

…That I am no longer reading what you wrote any more because I am bored to tears!
Whether it’s site content or an email you’re writing to a client, you have to keep the reader’s interest and focus. Humor and a familiar tone are very good ways to do this.
While setting up the fancy new RSS feed for this site at Feedburner, I ran across some things that were genuinely funny. One, surprisingly, was part of their actual navigation:
Troubleshootize? That’s great! And when you click on the tab, the tone continues with the headline, “Oh dear, what kind of trouble?”
Next up, I clicked over to the Analyze tab to see what that was about. My feed, however, was brand new and had no stats to analyze, so I was presented with:
Funny and helpful. That’s what I call user-centered design.
* I have no idea what this means. It rhymed, and I thought it was funny. So there.

Just goes to show you that cleaver humor is a great way to engage people. I’ve never understood why business sites don’t add more personality (like this) into their site. It engages the user and makes for a more positive experience.

And you’re right, cleaver humor is the best. Leave It To Beaver was a very funny show. ;-)
