I’m thankful for turkey

As we prepare to sit down for the traditional Thanksgiving feast, I think it only appropriate to give thanks for the turkey.  After all, without Tom Turkey, Thanksgiving wouldn't be the same.  So here are some Tom Turkey facts to share with your loved ones at dinner tonight:

  • Ben Franklin originally suggested that the turkey be the official United States bird. Luckily the idea didn't catch on.
  • Turkey droppings are actually being used as a fuel source at an electric power plant in Minnesota.
  • The heaviest turkey ever raised was 86 pounds.
  • A wild turkey can fly for short distances up to 55 miles an hour.
  • The tradition of breaking the wishbone for luck started back during the Roman empire.
  • A baby turkey is called a poult.
  • Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin ate roast turkey in foil packet for their first meal on the moon.
  • Turkeys can see in color.
  • June is National Turkey lover's month.
  • A turkey has 157 bones.
  • The dance called the "turkey trot" was named after the short, jerky steps that turkeys take.
  • Contrary to the myth, turkey's are actually pretty smart.

Thanks Tom, for all you do for us this time of year.
